Living With Eternity in Mind
Living With Eternity in Mind
Every day we are surrounded by distractions. Work deadlines, family schedules, social media, entertainment—all of these pull our attention to the here and now. But Scripture reminds us over and over again that life is more than what we see today. Our time on earth is short, but eternity lasts forever. That’s why living with eternity in mind changes how we see today.
Jesus put it plainly: “For what is a man profited, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?” (Matthew 16:26). Those words echo in my heart as both a warning and an invitation. They remind me—and I hope they remind you—that everything we do here should be done with eternity in mind.
The Danger of Forgetting Eternity
One of the greatest dangers for Christians today is living as if this life is all that matters. We can confess Christ with our mouths while spending our days consumed with comfort, possessions, and temporary success. But when we lose sight of eternity, our lives become shallow. We miss opportunities to share Christ. We trade lasting treasure for momentary pleasures.
I know this danger because I’ve lived it. For years, I wrestled with questions about faith and the reality of eternity. It wasn’t until Christ opened my eyes to the truth of the Gospel that I realized just how fragile life is—and how much is at stake. That realization changed everything.
Shifting Our Perspective: Living With Eternity in Mind
Living with eternity in mind doesn’t mean we ignore the responsibilities of daily life. We still work, raise families, and enjoy God’s blessings; in addition, we live with eternity in mind. But it changes how we approach those things.
-
Work becomes a way to honor God, not just earn a paycheck.
-
Family time becomes discipleship, not just entertainment.
-
Money becomes a tool for kingdom impact, not just personal comfort.
-
Trials become opportunities to grow in faith; as a result, they draw us closer to Christ rather than pushing us into despair.
Paul reminds us in 2 Corinthians 4:18: “While we look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen: for the things which are seen are temporal; but the things which are not seen are eternal.”
Practical Ways to Live Eternally Minded
So how do we keep eternity in focus? Here are a few practical steps:
-
Stay rooted in God’s Word. The Bible keeps our hearts aligned with eternal truth. Daily Scripture reading reminds us of the bigger picture.
-
Pray with heaven in view. When we pray, we’re reminded that we’re speaking to the eternal God who holds all things.
-
For example, invest in people, not just possessions. Souls are eternal—cars, houses, and bank accounts are not.
-
Serve with purpose. Look for ways to use your gifts for the kingdom. Even small acts of service have eternal impact.
-
Share the Gospel. There is no greater way to live with eternity in mind than to point others toward salvation in Christ.
Why I Write About Eternity
This conviction is at the core of my writing. I don’t write stories to entertain alone—I write to point people to Jesus. I write to remind believers of the urgency of the Gospel and to challenge us all to live for something bigger than ourselves. Therefore, my prayer is that each book, blog, and devotional will be a small spark that keeps eternity in focus for every reader.
A Final Encouragement
If you’ve found yourself caught up in the busyness of life, take a moment today to pause. Ask yourself: Am I living for today, or am I living for eternity?
Life is short; however, eternity lasts forever. My hope is that these words stir your heart, not with fear, but with joy. Because for those who are in Christ, eternity is not something to dread—it’s something to look forward to with eager expectation.
Let us live every day with our eyes fixed on Jesus, the One who promises eternal life to all who believe in Him.
